modular medical center for disaster relief

Design Proposal

When disaster strikes an area, one need is always consistent. Whether it is the act of a military or of nature, health-care will be required. A facility to properly carry out administrate medical care needs to be built quickly and efficiently while functioning well and standing reliably. Once the location is established, as the local medical relief center, its programmatic design from massing, to organization, to miniscule joint details should emphasizeorder and reliability in a manner which inspires a high standard of care and continued improvement not only on-site but within the repair of the surrounding community as a whole.

Construction Steps

When coming from the hands of a proper designer, construction of standard and specialty structural bays can be transported to any site and built with the use of minimal heavy equipment and/or training. The production of such a building would move away from the use of traditional Construction Documents as well as the oversight of a Developer, and even attempt to eliminate the need for highly trained or experienced construction teams. Instead the average local laymen or mission volunteer, could erect the structure from an instruction set, with basic machinery and tools.

Design Studies & Experiments

Today, new houses are streamlined for cheap and quick construction, so why would not the same be possible for small scale medical facilities? In this type of ‘cookie-cutter’ development the role of the Architect as lead designer and guide for construction
has been all but dismissed. A medical facility, however, has special needs which housing often does not. So how then can some of these specialty costs be mitigated? The studies in this document analyze several articles and books focused on what is the medical culture and how building design can heavily impact the efficiency and effectiveness of care.
